Fasting & Prayer Update – Week 5

Fasting & Prayer

Every Friday this summer at Big Valley Grace Community Church, we want to join together in the spiritual discipline of fasting & prayer as a church family. Each Friday as we fast, we will be directing our prayers toward a different need; for our personal lives, for our church family, and for our community and government. Join us this Friday as we fast and pray for courage!

Here are a few passages that may encourage you as you pray:

Read Psalm 27

God gave King David the courage to face the giant, King Saul and even his own son who sought to overthrow him. “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”

In Psalm 31 he writes, “In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed…”

Read Acts 21:7-13

The apostle Paul is warned that he will be arrested by the Gentiles for his faith if he continues on his journey. His friends even beg him not to go for fear of what will happen. Paul’s response is inspiring, Then Paul answered, “What do you mean by weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”‘

Read Ephesians 5:10-20

Paul encourages follows of Christ to put on the whole armor of God because we are in a spiritual battle. He closes this great passage with a plea for prayer that they would stand strong; “and Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.”

Questions for you…

How do you respond to those who challenge what you believe?
Are you afraid to talk about what Christ means to you?
Who could you encourage this week by sharing the living water of Christ?

Final thought

Read I Corinthians 2:1-2
People are often afraid to talk about their faith because they feel they don’t know enough. And, while we should be prepared to give a defense of the gospel, Paul puts it in perspective in I Corinthians by reminding us that our theology boils down to the message of Christ on the cross.
