Marriage & Human Sexuality Statement

We believe God intentionally designed and created humanity male and female.

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. – Genesis 1:27

We believe marriage is ordained and instituted by God and, according to the Scriptures, can only exist and be fulfilled between one man and one woman. A civil government’s sanction of a union will be recognized as a legitimate marriage by the church only to the extent that it is consistent with the definition of “marriage” found in this Statement of Faith.

So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. – Genesis 2:21-24

Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” “What did Moses command you?” he replied. They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.” “It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.” – Mark 10:2-12

We believe marriage is a picture of the relationship of Christ and the Church and is to be a lifelong, covenant relationship between a man and a woman based on love, respect, mutual submission and personal sacrifice. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. – Ephesians 5:21-33

We believe God intended sexual intimacy to be enjoyed only within the context of the male and female marriage relationship; and that all other sexual relations outside of marriage are personally destructive, sinful, inconsistent with the teachings of the Bible and the Church, and forbidden by God.

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” – Genesis 1:28 Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. – Genesis 2:25 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. – Hebrews 13:4

Know the truth of the Word of God

Marriage is a covenant relationship between only one man and one woman, and sexual immorality is a sin.  Read our statement of faith; be able to find the verses in your own bible, and have conversations about what God’s Word says.

Recognize that all humans are sinners and need salvation

Jesus Christ died for all the sins of the world, including sexual sin. You need Jesus Christ as the Savior from your sin, just as much as the next person does. We all need God’s grace.

Understand your role as a disciple of Jesus Christ

God has commanded you to love God, love others, and commissioned you to make disciples. In your own life, set a godly example in the areas of marriage and sexual purity.

Believe that God is able to guide you in every moment, by the power of the Holy Spirit and the truth of His Word

Be praying about potential conversations, that God might give you great compassion for people and conviction for the truth and authority of God’s Word.

Follow Jesus’ example to extend grace to others yet stand firm in the truth of the Word of God

Pursue biblical conversations with people, even those who think differently, allowing God to work in and through you to reach the lost. Display love in personal interactions, the neighborhood and marketplace, while using social media, etc. Courageously confront Christians who are misrepresenting Jesus Christ.
