How will we be a healthy church in the next generation? In the final week of the “Pass It On” series at Big Valley Grace Community Church in Modesto, California — a weekend celebrating the Built to Last building project’s halfway point — the speaker opens with a story about a lunch with a businessman two years ago that grew into a Thursday 2 p.m. discipleship group, and this week produced four generations of invites in one office: commercial insurance, motor-building, a contractor with a rebuilt vehicle — all from one phone call. His point: pick up the phone, say yes to lunch, take the coffee — you never know what a small decision will become two years down the road. Teaching from Ephesians 4:1–16 with responses from his own four-and-a-half adult children — Savannah (17), [youngest son] (18), Eric (20), Angel (21), and his oldest (23) — on the important subjects they’ve discussed as father and child, he walks through three marks of a healthy church: walking with Jesus in spiritual unity (our call, our bond, our hope), in spiritual diversity (our gift and our ministry, measured out uniquely by Christ), and in spiritual maturity (our stature, our doctrine, our love). A building is no good empty — but a building full of disciples making disciples, Christian men pouring into young boys and Christian women pouring into young girls, is very good.
