Week 3 — Monday: My Father Is The King
Matthew 6:10, 13
When we were professors in a Christian college in the Philippines, we were often in discussions with the students about our cultures. The students were interested in my Jewish background. One of them knew about the Jewish American Prince (or Princess)—the offspring of a holocaust survivor that tends to be a bit of a pampered child, in other words, spoiled! The students wanted to know if I was a J.A.P. So, one day I put a big sign on my office door. It said, “YES! I AM a Jewish American Prince—MY FATHER IS THE KING!”
This is a cornerstone of our faith—God, our Father, is the King of the Universe. We are told in Scripture that whoever receives Jesus and believes on His name, He gives the power to become a child of God (John 1:12). We are citizens of the Kingdom of God.
The Lord’s Prayer reminds us that we live in God’s kingdom as the children of God. This implies two important truths.
WE ARE RESPONSIBLE TO THE KING. A king is an absolute monarch with the right to expect obedience and subservience from the subjects. A kingdom is not a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, but a government of the King, by the King and for the King! We are HIS people and the sheep of HIS pasture.
THE KING HAS MADE HIMSELF RESPONSIBLE TO US. God has made countless promises to His “subjects” that are royal treatment. If we are obedient children (subjects), God treats us like princes and princesses! We are even brothers and sisters of the firstborn (Romans 8:29). God has promised His “kids” both abundant and everlasting life.
Abundant life speaks of the blessings God offers in this life. Everlasting life means a home in Heaven! So we ARE princes and princesses. OUR FATHER IS THE KING!

September 19, 2023 at 7:44 amToday I am thankful that the truth and promises that are given to us by our Father are not dependent upon our feelings. It’s a fact that we are children of a King! That fact changes my attitude about prayer and bringing my “supplications” before God. He is a perfect Father and that encourages me to leave my expected outcomes in his hands. He LOVES his children! …. Julia Bordona

September 19, 2023 at 9:04 am“King” is such a helpful biblical Truth. It reminds me of the Kingdom I’m to live for and the personal kingdom I fight daily to abandon. It reminds me of the King I’m to serve; I have a master and it’s not me. It reminds me of the King who is sovereign; in control and under control. He’s the decision maker.
Kings throughout history would always have a court around them and a component of that was often messengers, ready to carry forth word from the King. That word had power, it had authority, it had impact, it was revered, respected, and followed. I pray I seek and follow the King’s words in the same way.
