Week 10 — Monday: Lord, Teach Us To Pray

Luke 11:1

When was the last time you asked Jesus, “Lord, teach me how to pray?” When I became one of His new followers, I asked Him to teach me: “Lord, teach me how to have intimacy with the Father like you have.”

Candidly, it’s time I asked Him again.

“Thank you, Master, that you wait for me; your furious longing to be with me amazes me.” He responds to me, “You’re my beloved child; you’re the pride of my life and the joy of my life. I celebrate you.”

I’ve wanted prayer to be a practice that came naturally. But disappointingly, it isn’t because my nature always fights against the Spiritual. Presenting myself to God is a simple, practical exercise. Regularly meeting with my Master to talk takes discipline—a regular exercise in intentional action. It takes place at a certain time, at a certain place, with a group of certain people, or alone, for very certain reasons. But it happens.

It’s not that I have to make time to interact with the Master—I want to talk with my Lord. I want to walk with Him to talk through the day, kick around the challenges, and be quiet long enough to let Him respond. This practice, for some people, comes easy. Not for me—it’s been a discipline that I have had to cultivate all of my Christian life.

“Would you just stop and be with Me,” Jesus says to me often. “Quit trying to love Me, and just let Me love you.”

Daily habitual prayer is not a requirement of the believer, but have no doubt, He’ll be waiting for you at the appointed time that the two of you agreed upon.

He has a furious longing for you—more than you can possibly imagine.
